IV iron therapy for the treatment of iron deficiency when oral iron is ineffective or cannot be used. The intramuscular route is no longer recommended. Ferric carboxymaltose (Ferinject) is funded under Special Authority for use in the community if the patient has been diagnosed with iron-deficiency anaemia with a serum ferritin level of less than or equal to 20 mcg/L
